The decision to discontinue the sale of Viagra, Pfizer Inc.’s “generic version” of Pfizer’s erectile dysfunction drug was the result of the “jumping of sales of Viagra and other similar drugs from lower-priced to higher-priced generic versions.”
The FDA stated that, “the FDA has determined that there is no appropriate evidence to support a finding that the generic version of the brand drug is unsafe, or otherwise potentially unsafe, for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.”
FDA issued a press release saying that the decision to discontinue the sale of Viagra and its generic version “is not based on an assessment of the evidence presented in the public and/or the FDA’s assessment of the safety and effectiveness of the available generic equivalents of the brand drug.”
The FDA will update this story on August 25, 2012.
